It’s been a whirl wind last 6 months, having been working on AMC’s Kevin Smith’s “Comic Book Men” with the Secret Stash Crew (Walt Flanagan, Mike Zapcic, Bryan Johnson, Ming Johnson and the Production Crew). To date I haven’t written about it. Primarily because I felt there was a lot of “Hush Hush secrecy” that I simply didn’t want to reveal , but we are heading well into the season with episode 3#3 getting ready to air this Sunday (10pm est right after the “Walking Dead” on AMC) and episode #2 Re-airing on Friday Night at 11pm est on AMC. As the show’s resident expert, I got to look at a lot of Great Items and met some really Fantastic (and pretty Odd) People.
I have been asked how I got the opportunity and why did they pick me (over all the other Popculturist around the world), I actually was born in Red Ban NJ (the home of Secret Stash) and have been going to the shop since it was “Comicology” and located on Monmouth Street (where I once had my shop). I was approached by Walt Flanagan and asked to due an audition (this is when they were working on the pitch reel in July 2011) So I went into the “Stash” with a box of some of my “stuff” and sat down and started talking on camera, they has asked me to speak for “10 to 15 minutes” I was on camera for close to an hour (Rambling away). and I got the “part” but the “part” evolved as production began and what was originally going to be an “Unscripted Reality” show loosely based on the popular “Pawn Stars” , Morphed into what has become today and taken it’s own form - part “Unscripted Reality”, Part PodCast, Part sit-comic with a lot of Geekdom thrown in.
“Comic Book Men” is it’s own being and when it was evolving my original part “Morphed” as well, with any unscripted reality show, there needed to be some vetting of what was to be shown on air (otherwise it would be completely boring). So even though all items are raw and brought in by regular folks, we needed to do some local searching for cool stuff. and that was my primary function during the show production , working with Casting in NYC and vetting items, so they were legit and there were no repetitions. The scenes I shot were just extra “icing on the cake” I am not an actor, but a Comic Book Collector at heart, who has grown his passion for Popcultre into a business.
I use the word “Popculturist” quite often, even though it is not yet a word in the dictionary, I have considered myself one for years as a collector and investigator of the demographics that drive the fans and other collectors in Geekdom to collect, display, hoard and discover, cultural items of their (ours & my) childhood, I know I am not alone in this passion having been to early 500 Toy - Comic - Record shows and countless Flea Markets & Swap Meets across the country. The passion that we share as collectors is awesome and I think that a lot of AMC’s “Comic Book Men” will continue to try to shine a light on that.
I hope that this gives you a bit of more insight and introduction to who I am, anyone who follows TESD, or “I sell comics” on Smodcast have heard me chirp in from time to time. I just wanted to give you all a brief introduction and with the show if you show ever need a question answered you can email us at email@example.com, we are also co-creators of the Asbury Park Comic Con which will me on May 12th 2012 in Asbury Park NJ, and you can also reach us at www.popculturizm.com (where we sell comic book ..albeit mostly vintage underground ones) again I hope that everyone stays tuned to AMC’s “COMIC BOOK MEN” was a Great Time helping with my small part in making it, I will be in every other episode (r so I have been told) So stay tuned and thanks for reading this…..my first tumblr blog.
